If Bruckner has entered the pantheon of German Romanticism, it is at the end of a path strewn with thorns. He was a shy, awkward little schoolteacher and organist from rural Austria, laughed at by Viennese society, but he was also a relentless worker who devoted most of his almost monastic existence to building a major monument: his 9 symphonies.
Despite doubts and successive setbacks, and buoyed by his unshakeable faith, he waited until the age of 60 to achieve his first triumph with the 7th symphony. His music looked far beyond the horizon of his contemporaries, like that of his compatriot Franz Schubert, whom he loved so much.
