In 1870, 3,800 Communards were sentenced to deportation to New Caledonia. In 1871, following the Mokrani revolt in Algeria, the French colonial authorities deported the Kabyle insurgents. They joined the Communards on the boats that set sail from Brest. They all found themselves in exile in faraway lands, where they were confronted with new violence. In 1878, in New Caledonia, a major Kanak revolt was put down with extreme cruelty.
